  1. The Holt Renfrew at 144 Bloor West was 60,000 square feet, approximately. The Yorkdale store, prior to its relocation, was about 16,000 square feet.

  2. I will always remember Holt's at 144 Bloor West. Awesome. The Fur Dept. managed by my father. The brass elevators and the elevator lady with her navy dress and white handgloves! Oh, the memories.

  3. Holts is very much alive and well as Canada's High end Department Store. It has recently reno'd its Flagship Toronto Bloor Street location and opened vast new branches in downtown Vancouver and Calgary. It has 12 locations in major Canadian markets such as Edmonton, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa besides the Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary branches. Holts is owned by Canada's Weston Family who also now own Selfridges in the UK and Brown Thomas in the Republic of Ireland.

  4. Thank you for the update, and information on Holts. I am very happy that the store is flourishing. By including the Holt Renfrew name in The Department Store Museum, I did not mean to imply that the store was defunct; only that its name belongs with other great retailers, and to reminisce about its past.

Before long, The Department Store Museum will have exhibits on Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, Holts cousins south of the border, which are still operating.

I have been to Selfridges, and more recently, on my honeymoon in 2006, to the Brown Thomas stores in Dublin and Cork. They are very fine indeed! Surprisingly, the Marks & Spencer store across Grafton Street from Brown Thomas, is one of the most beautiful department stores I've ever visited.

  5. It's funny you should mention what a fine store M&S Grafton St is. It is the original Brown Thomas. They bought a competitor's across the road (Switzers) and moved. The interior of the new building has new matched the elegance of the old one. And some call it progress!
