ReplyDeleteIn January 1983, Federated Department Stores dissolved the 2 location Levy's division corporate offices, which were in the El Con store. The other branch was in The Foothills Mall. Plans for a third location in Albuquerque's Coronado Center were put on hold. Rather than placing Levy's under the direction of Bullock's, which already had a presence in the Phoenix market, Dallas based Sanger Harris assumed responsibility. The Levy's name was retained until approximately 1986 when they were re-branded as Sanger Harris. Less than a year later they became Foley's(due to the Sanger Harris/Foley's merger). In 1988, May Department Stores acquired the Foley's division, and The Foothills Mall location was closed. The El Con location ultimately became a Robinsons-May location, and was closed in 2007 by Macy's.
ReplyDeleteThe El Con location is being demolished this week - see AZ daily Star for details.
ReplyDeleteLoved each of the quality department stores of Tucson:Levy's, Steinfeld's and Jacome's. Just wandering through them as a teenager back in the mid sixties was a slice of heaven; I can still remember their elegance, and scent.
ReplyDeleteWas a balm for my soul during a chaotic time. I thank them all.
My Dad Tony Gallo cut hair on the 3rd floor "Beauty Salon".I have good memories of going to see him and of many Levy's employees who would stop by our house on the way home from work for a glass of wine, shot of IW Harper and a beer.We lived on the corner of Mountain and Speedway.1301..This was my grandmothers house which she bought in1926.Her name was Ida DeConcini and my mother was Alice DeConcini.Peter Gallo.
ReplyDeleteI meant to say my mother was Alice DeConcini Gallo
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather Aaron moved the store up from Douglas, Bisbee to Tucson because my grandmother wanted distance from the in laws. My father, uncle and great uncle all worked there. My Grandfather died suddenly at age 53 in 1958 leaving his brother Leon in charge. Leon sold to Federated in 1959-60.... Intresting Tucson tidbit...My grandfather did not favor the Elcon location for a mall , he thought it should be moved further east so as not to kill downtown and without his cooperation they had no deal. But when he died they did Elcon sooo it would have been interesting to see what would have happened in town had he lived...
ReplyDeleteI was electronics Buyer prior to merger/Sanger/Harris
ReplyDeleteBack in the early '70's we used to eat at the restaurant on the second floor for Sunday dinner. The view of the Catalina mountains was incredible. The food was good, too. I one saw Martin Sheen walking through the Men's department. It was probably 1975 or 1976.
ReplyDeleteYes! I was a college student then and my parents and I would eat there occasionally, food and view were excellent! It was a real treat to eat there after trying to live on mac and cheese for weeks on end! I saw Kenny Rogers near Levy's inside the mall around 1976 when he was in Tucson filming a movie and I was shopping instead of going to class. Good times!
ReplyDeleteI worked as asst. mgr of the Fur Salon @ Levy's for Mr. Carl Singer. It was during the
ReplyDeleteVietnam War, and my husband was stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB with the 4456th CCTS.
1968...fond memories of a story that was INCREDIBLE! Sad that simply nothing of it's kind exists
in this day and age. Cary Grant made an appearance one day..he was on the Board of Faberge at the time and came for a high level meeting. Ann Margaret visited while filming a movie in Tucson. Bill Blass came with his asst. "Jo" from NYC for a special "trunk showing".
We had it all...beautiful surroundings, elegance in customer service...and simply the best of everything. Bridal Salon, High Fashions, Cosmetic Dept that went on forever..even a gourmet
candy dept. If you shopped at Levy's of Tucson...you were fortunate indeed. If you were an
employee, your memories are fond ones!
I am Erin Levy, Aarons granddaughter. My early memories were of all the beautiful things in the store. It was a wondrous place. Sadly it is gone, an era went with it. But we can remember the standards of service, and civility of that time gone by. I remember the lifelong dedication of many of Levys topnotch employees.
DeleteI have a pair of boy infant shorts that was given to my grandmother when my father was born in 1922. They are still in the box with a congratulations note from Levy's on Bay & Hogan Streets in Jacksonville Florida. Just wondering if they could be of any value to anyone.
ReplyDeleteI worked in the Electronics Department for 10 years and it was a wonderful place to work. Fond memories.

The Levy's in Jax I don't think had any association w the Arizona Levy's. We shopped for lingerie at the El Con store in the 70's interspersed with sharing pitchers of margaritas around the corner in the restaurant. What a way to spend the day. In those days there were ladies who would assist you with fitting, and bringing different sizes and styles to the fitting rooms. Those margaritas really helped with those fittings!
ReplyDeleteIs there a website for Levy's Twenty Year Club? Thank you, jacque

ReplyDeleteMost favorite was the architect and the Native American Indian style design.
