In what relations were the Birmingham and Chattanooga Loveman's chains (biological and corporate), and which one was founded first?
ReplyDeleteThere was also a Loveman's in Huntsville Al I would love to see pictures of, as the mall it was located in is no longer standing.
ReplyDeleteI do not know if there was any corporate connection between Loveman's In Birmingham and the store of the same name in Chattanooga. My mother was born and reared in Chattanooga and Loveman's there was her store of choice. After moving to Nashville in 1946 she shopped occasionally at Loveman's in Nashville (about which I know little except the name was the same and it was located at or near the Nashville Arcade). I remember the Nashville Loveman's and it was a smaller store with several floors and did not fare well against Cain-Sloan, Harvey's and Castner-Knott, its bigger and better financed competitors in Nashville.
ReplyDeleteThere was no connection to the stores in TN. They were completely different entitity....The full name of Lovemans was Lovemans of Alabama to distinguish itself from the TN stores...

DeleteLoveman Joseph & Loeb was purchased by City Stores Mercantile Co. out of New York in 1934. City Stores was part of The Bank Of Securties, a real estate holding company in Philadelphia. Other retail companies owned by City Stores were Franklin Simon, Lit Brothers, Lansburgs, Kaufman Strass, B. Lowensteins, Richards, Mason Blanch and there have been others that I don't remember.
ReplyDeleteFYI: At certain times of the year, Loveman's would block off the angle underneath the clock so no one could walk there. Seems there is/was a Birmingham city ordinance which stated that, if a property on a sidewalk is unclaimed for X number of days, it becomes the property of the city.
ReplyDeleteLoveman's did NOT want that to happen, ergo, they "claimed" it, I think every six months.
As the address below the picture shows, the name of the store was officially Loveman,Joseph & Loeb Co. Most department stores had both an official and a casual name. Hence, the J.L. Hudson Co. was casually called Hudson's, the Halle Brothers Co. was known as Halle's for short, and R.H. Macy & Company went by the common name of Macy's.

"An Alabama Institution Since 1887"
Guess it was used for advertising when the new store opened after the fire.
I have a mink coat and hat from lovemans, where can I find the value.
ReplyDeleteI have a hat from Loveman’s in Birmingham that my mother-in-laws grandmother purchased. It is made out of maybe peacock feathers and is in good condition still. Where would I find out the worth of it?
