The on-line museum of North America's independent department stores. The museum holds all sorts of information about classic department stores which either no longer exist, or are changed beyond recognition. A few of them are still with us, and provide an interesting connection to North America's retail past. The others are presented so that they may be properly remembered as a tangible part of the lives of their customers, shopping destinations where memories were often made.
My Dad started his retail career at Vandervoorts in St Louis. We moved to Hawaii to continue his career at Liberty House. Lived in Hawaii for 2 years and came back "home" to Kansas City and Dad was Manager or Hall's Downtown. Hall's on the Plaza was being built and Hall's Crown Center would come later. I woudl love to see pictures of the original Halls store downtown KC. It was a magical place for me. I cannot find anything online that the store ever existed. It was a beautiful elegant store and my Dad was so proud to be a part of Halls. Can you help? Thanks...Trish

to see a picture of Halls on Grand Avenue, as well as an inside photo that was in the Kansas City Star. It's difficult to find pictures, but I bet Hallmark has some kind of archive for the store. It's too bad that Hall's Plaza location is now closed . . . It was quite unique when opened.
My parents both worked at Vandervoorts where they met and fell in love in 1956. Mom was the sportswear buyer, my father was the milinery buyer. Does anyone have any interior photos of the store?

DeleteThere was briefly a Vandervoort's store at Northwest Plaza in St.Ann. It opened in August of 1965 and closed in 1969. it was replaced by a Famous-Barr Home Store and eventually split into a Movie Theater and Food Court.
ReplyDeleteI have a 1930's dress with a label that reads: Adaptation MOLYNEUX. I obtained the dress from an elderly lady in St Genevieve, MO. I am trying to find where she may have purchased the dress and the most logical place to start is St. Louis. Shot in the dark but was trying to find which department store might have had a department carrying French Couture.

ReplyDeleteI have 2 pieces of art that came from the Scruggs Vandervoort and Barney. One piece is a huge oil painting which is pretty old. It belonged to my great uncle whose wife liked to shop. Supposedly this was a painting that hung in the store. The other piece is MCM with price tag from Vandervoorts. Is there any way to find out info on the art that was in the stores in St Louis?

DeleteMy great uncle was the manager of the downtown store and when they built each new store he would go there. Many great memories, eating in the tea room, watching the models come by with their new attire. Pretty much got anything I wanted from candy,clothes and many toys. What a great era!!

ReplyDeleteI have two of 16 very large wood shipping crates from 1947. These crates contained professional oil paintings from New York shipped by train to Scruggs, Vanderbilt and Barney. They are both beautiful and I up cycled them into lit liquor cabinets. Wish I could share a picture.
