Rhodes in downtown Portland occupied the historical Olds Wortman and King store, later The Galleria, now a cooking school. It had, in the 70s, the most AMAZING discount shoe store...cutting edge luxury brands like MAUD FRIZON for giveaway prices. HEAVEN. The stock elsewhere in the store could charitably be described as dumpy, matronly, and unimaginative.
ReplyDeleteIn a modern-day twist, the building is being renovated to house a new concept called City Target, a smaller version of the chain, with an edited format of merchandise.
ReplyDeleteAt least it will remain a core retail building, unlike the complete abandonment of retail in most of our downtown areas.

ReplyDeletealso there was a Rhodes in the Colonade mall in Phx, AZ.....i still have my teddy bear on my bed from there when i was five-i cried for it and that holiday my Mom had given it to me! :)

I was Rhodes Hi Board Rep from Wilson High School in Portland Oregon in 1969-1970.Betty-Anne McMullen Mussman I was asked to be Rhodes Sewing Council Chairman for the city and loved working every part of the store, commentating fashion shows, making clothes for mannequins and being asst. manager of the fabric department. I located Tina Miller in Washington who was the Hi Board rep from Grant High School. I now live at Inn at Otter Crest Resort in Otter Rock Oregon. Wonderful memories...and Vi Ann Austin was our leader who was a fabulous mentor who arranged modeling stints for Meier and Frank, Rhodes, and Nordstroms...some of the happiest days of my life...

ReplyDeleteOn the top floor, One of our pipefitters broke off a corroded valve on the sprinkler reservoir. Some 2000 gallons of water went down the stairwell into a basement drain.
