Known as "Canada's Department Store". Everything at Eaton's was great - really a class act. The Eaton's stores were the heart of downtown in cities across Canada for 130 years. I sure do miss them, especially at Christmas!
ReplyDeleteIf only I could step back in time and go shopping at Eaton's. I think everything we owned came from that store. They had a way of knowing what the customer would like, and so shopping was easy. Everything they sold was tasteful and sophisticated. Sure miss you Eaton's!
ReplyDeleteEaton's an iconic Canadian Institution. Amazing customer service, selection and presence in the community. No Canadian store has ever been comparable. Truly missed.
ReplyDeleteYeah Both Eaton's and Simpson's. Both Canadian Icons. Great stores, remember them when I was young. Both were big stores in Halifax, NS with stores in Dartmouth. I remember the Santas in both stores.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in buying any vintage Star Wars items (1977-1985) that have an Eaton's price tag or Eaton's logo on them. If you have any, please contact me at cn333@ncf.ca - thank you!
ReplyDeleteI have for sale a table with chairs that came from the Eatons store. The table has the Eaton's stamp on it. You can call me at (902)354-4296 or email me at chy63@eastlink.ca. Thanks, Charlotte.
ReplyDeleteNeed Your Opinions,Regarging a T.Eaton Co. spring summer 1901 Fall Winter catalogue46,catalogue47/Eaton's spring and summer 1927.They're so very interesting to look back at,how things have changed, over these years. please contact me,as to what should i do with these catalogus.Thank you. Robyn 306-536-2154.robyn
ReplyDeleteThe 1901 and 1927 catalogues are reproductions, published in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Unfortunately, the 1927 catalogue reproduction was done in black & white (other than the cover), to save money. The original 1927 catalogue was printed with many pages in full colour.
DeleteYou could save them and enjoy them, or you could put them up for sale on Ebay. Or, if you have a scanner and a lot of time, you could scan the pages and save the digital images, then sell the catalogues.
I have a question for anyone out there. In 1985 I visited an Eatons museum in the Yorkdale Mall. An older woman was working there at the time and I gave her a copy of a photo I had of a Eatons delivery cart that she said was used on Center Island. She was shocked that I had it because she claimed no pictures of these carts exsit only drawings. What happened to that museum? I still have the original negative if anyone is interested as a photo of 4 salea girls from Eatons. )One of them is my Grandmother at 17 years old who died in 1988 at the age of 104. contact me Gord at
ReplyDeleteThis does bring back fond memories,I worked at thr Eaton store as a mail clerk, but my desire was to be on thr floor to meet customers,at 18 I Was sent to the jewerlery repair dept.left, returned in 1974 retired 1993
ReplyDeleteIt was the best, and I sure miss them.

My grandfather worked for Eaton's designing for the Fancy Goods department - needlepoint, cross stitch etc. I am looking for any patterns, table cloths, napkins or other items of this nature which have the Eaton's label.
ReplyDeleteEaton's hosted art contests for its employees and from this my grandfather also sold some of his watercolour paintings, mostly of the Toronto area. I am interested in locating any of his paintings signed C.S. Walker or CSW. heatherjanderson@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteI am in the UK. I have been looking through a box which belonged to my grandmother and found a very old battered catalogue. It is an Eaton's catalogue from the Fall & Winter of 1922-23. I remember my grandmother telling me she spent a few years in Canada around this time so she must have brought it back to the UK with her.
ReplyDeleteIt is fascinating reading it on a cold and snowy afternoon.

I remember going to the restaurant with my Mother. The modals would walk around dressed in Stylish Dress', Hat's, Gloves it was so elegant.
ReplyDeleteI'm now 82 , I'll never forget the delight of it.
I remember going to Eatons (Queen Street Store) with my older sister & my mom at Christmas. We went downtown to see Santa and then went for a ride on the train that went all around Toy Land, at the end of the ride we got a Pumpkin Head Book and a present (usually a book, game or puzzle). My mother used to say that T. Eaton Company had the biggest selection of dolls in Toronto (my sister and I always got a doll for Christmas),I still have some of them. It was always fun to go to the Annax and have soft chocolate ice cream or an ice cream sandwich and watch the ladies making the waffles. It was such fun to go shopping and hide from my mom in amongst the clothes. That was not fun for her trying to find two kids in amongest the clothes. I used to take my little boys down so they could enjoy the store like I did as a child. Such fun never forgotten.....June Sagness
ReplyDeleteI remember going to Eaton's at Christmas in the 1950's, to look in all the windows and see the Christmas displays, they were awesome, it was part of our Christmas, I'll never forget this part of my life.
ReplyDeleteI found this web site while looking for something and have to say very excited to share my memories.
ReplyDeleteMy mom had only one credit card all her life and it was to Eaton's, which she would use every summer to buy her 4 children all their new school clothes every year for years. We Lived in Quebec and always went to the downtown Montreal Store. I loved the elevators and the attendants who would announce both in English and French which floor we were stopping at. I remember getting many wonderful things there but my first personal purchase was a Rubix Cube that I bought in the huge toy section.
In the store was a plaque with the names of the WWII family members of employees who were killed in action and I can't tell you how awed I was when I found my great uncles name there.
I was able to bring my son there once before it closed ( I now live on Cape Cod in MA). I don't know where that plaque now resides but I do hope it is treated as the treasure it is. There are many more treasured memories about going to Eaton's throughout my life. They are that much more special as I age.
I hope anyone else who has had the chance to share there thoughts takes a minute to do so.
Hello, Lori!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your comments. May I use them in my book? Please email me at bakgraphics@comcast.net
You are right - special memories of a special store, repeated all over Canada!
Bruce
Eaton's an iconic Canadian Institution.Eaton's structure is nice.
ReplyDeleteHi there, my parents have stored in their basement a children's rocker branded Pumpkin Head which I believe came from Eaton's. Does anybody know if this is worth anything before my parent's get rid of it?
ReplyDeleteI used to work for Eaton's in the 80's. What a great company to work for! As a little girl, my dream job was to be an elevator lady in the old Eaton's store. I never got to be "the elevator lady", but the first morning that I was assigned to open the store, I arrived early enough to ride the elevator and live the dream! Great memories! We always got Christmas cards from the Eaton family with the Christmas portrait. I have to go look for those cards, I may still have them!
ReplyDeleteI have two T Eaton Co Limited catologue reproduction prints. They were sold for a limited time at Eatons. My aunt bought them because she was trying to save money in her pursuit of a high quality picture frame for some pictures she had taken. The story goes that she obtained quotes for a nice frame which was several hundred dollars. Then, at Eaton's she saw the prints in a very nice frame, and she thought she'd by them for the frame as the cost was a fair bit cheaper than the custom made frame prices she was quoted. I say this because I'm guessing she probably paid about $150.00 - $250.00 at the time, but, I do not know. Anyways she gifted two of them to my mother who left them to me. They are both limited edition prints, of which only 2000 were made. Both are in the first 50 prints. Does anyone have any idea of their value. Feel free to email me at rcormier1@bell.net if you have any information about these, or are interested in buying them. I've searched online and I can't find any others.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many children were born because their parents met while working at Eaton's.
ReplyDeleteA lot!!! Probably a large proportion of the Canadian population at one time because after the government and the railways, it was Canada's biggest employer!

I am looking for an article about two Davy twin sisters that worked together in Eaton's Toronto Store for 60 years before retiring. Can you help? I remember seeing it and had it saved at one time but so many computers and locations around the world for me later... contact is denysedavis@hotmail.com. Shane Davis (Mother was their cousin)
ReplyDeleteShane, both the Toronto Globe & Mail and the Star have archives to which you can subscribe for a short period and search old newspapers. You can download the page then, in PDF format. That's what I'd do.
ReplyDeleteBruce
My friend used to work at Eaton in Canada. He used to tell me great experiences he had with the customers and with the fellow staffs. That made me realized how happy these people are who are associated with fashion industries in any way.
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Eton
I have a couple pairs of very old spectacles that are beautiful, they are gold framed, in original case and has the little cloth to clean them with, the cloth has some writing and T.Eatons Toronto. Says bring the glasses in around any time if they need Adjustment its free, also in bottom left corner it has. No.102. Says fits U Lens Cleaner. These glasses all belonged to my great great grandparents but I'm trying to find an approximate date. Thanks. Jessica, Woodstock Ontario.
ReplyDeleteI also have a small leather case with the name on it, it appears to be some sort of medical tools, I've looked everywhere but can't figure them out. The set is complete and was also a great great relatives. There appears to be a name inscribed but I can't figure out the lettering as its old calligraphy. Did they sell medical tools? Thanks. Jessica
ReplyDeletemy parents had a renter called Mr. Peters in the late 1960's in Toronto. He worked in the shoe department of queen street store for many years. he wore glasses..tall man. very nice man. I wonder what became of him.
ReplyDeleteAlso, i loved the blue tube department. I also recall later that the pharmacy was in the basement.i love the wooden escalators .
i wish i could see those escalators again. I love the small one at the Eatons college store near the south entrance. It is no longer in view and blocked of..I wonder if I asked, that someone could open the door and let me see it...it is suppose to be there still.
oh, well. i love the whole Eatons downtown warehouse, budget store and main store. i loved the eatons college store too. what a shame it is a winners now.
You will love my upcoming book - there is a picture of the escalator at Eaton's - College Street in it. It is scheduled to be published on October 21, 2014. It is an enormous effort - the book will run to almost 500 pages, with 200 illustrations.

I have a seamstress reverse sewing machine bought from eatons in 1933. Very good condition and all original instruction manual and documents. Looking to sell it, but don't know where to start, LOL. If someone could point me in right direction, that would be great. mom4ever36@Gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI am looking for James Ward who worked in Eaton's Winnipeg Store for 40 years between 1913 - 1953. Can you help? I would like to find out which department he worked in? Also if his brother Thomas Ward worked there? They both emigrated to Canada from the UK in the early 1900s. Contact me on tracy18c@hotmail.co.uk Thanks.
ReplyDeleteStill cherish the Eatons Beauty Doll my Grandmother gave me for Christmas one year. Lovely face
ReplyDeleteI have a pin cushion put out by T. Eaton Co Limited advertising their catalogue Toronto and Winnipeg with a Union Jack on flip side. (1907 to 1919 maybe) in navy and red colours. Does anybody know anything about this treasure? Is this the only one left in the world? Found it in the bottom of a sewing basket at an auction.
ReplyDeleteThe first credit card I applied for was the Eaton's card. Worked downtown Toronto in the 70's. Loved the Eaton's store both locations. Remember the Christmas Windows! Loved it, Loved shopping there. Really like this site. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI worked at Eaton's timothy's in Victoria, BC at the Tillicum store for a number of years, I was 15 when I started working there, I worked there till the store closed great memories, still have friends that I met from working at the store, those were probably some of the best years of my life great employer, too bad it had to come to an end like all good things.

When did the Eaton's Store close in Brandon, Manitoba?
ReplyDeleteWhen did the Eaton's Store in Brandon Close?
ReplyDeleteI shopped in the Brandon Store a lot.
ReplyDeleteWhen did it close?
Eaton's in Brandon closed in 2000.
DeleteIt was among the last to close; impressive as it was a smaller store in a smaller city.
I started working for Eaton's in 1966 at the age of 17 as an entry clerk in the furniture delivery department from 11pm to 7am at the St.Laurent whse. When l left in Oct. 1997 ,l was a delivery driver on the West Island. I enjoyed working for Eaton's.They were good to us.
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather worked at Eaton's Toronto for his entire working years. Is there an Eaton's museum? If so, where is it.
ReplyDeleteThere isn't a museum, but there should be! Many Canadian museums might have Eaton exhibits. I lectured in the Muskoka Lakes this summer, and both the Steamboat Museum and the Muskoka Lakes Museum had nice exhibits on Eaton's. The Archives of Ontario has their corporate records. Alas, it's all in storage and one day, maybe a large commemorative exhibit could bring the store back to life, if only in our hearts & memories.
ReplyDelete-Bruce
My dad Jim O'Neill worked at Eaton's in downtown Edmonton as a Salesman in Major Appliances, other then a paper route as a kid Eaton's was his only employer. He worked on commission bases and had many loyal and repeat customers who even had later generations of their families ask for him when buying appliances because of good service they received. He worked there from 1941-1980. He served his country during the war and returned to Eaton's and worked there until the day he passed. His employment at Eaton's helped him and his wife Norma (who worked part time at Woodward's) raise six kids. I have many fond memories as a kid attending Eaton's family Christmas parties and attending family Christmas shopping day where the store was open just for employee families to shop. I also recall sometimes watching the wall of television sets while waiting for him to get off work so I could ride home with him if I was downtown for dentist appointment or something of the sort. I now collect many things Eaton's related. I would also be very interested in reading your book once it is published. It nice to know so many other people feel the same way about Eaton's and to read their comments.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sean! Your parents were special people, I believe. It is interesting to know of your family history and how Eaton's fits in. The book is available (try Indigo) and I have been getting good reviews and nice comments from many people! Thanks for your story.

Both my father & grandfather worked for over 25 years at Eaton's Montréal, each received a gold ring & watch when they became members of the IV Century Club. Grandpop spent his entire working life with the company and Dad left to go on to another career. In the 40s Montréal Eaton's employees spent vacations at Colford Lodge/Farm and I seem to recall (I was a very young child) that these vacations were either fully or partially funded by the firm. Do you know where I might find information?
ReplyDeleteI would check the Archives of Ontario - The T. Eaton company records are stored there.
ReplyDelete-Bruce
Thank you for this - I will try the Archives - much appreciated
ReplyDeleteI have two numbered (framed) prints of Punkinhead bought at Eatons and a Punkinhead Stuffed Bear (wearing a Christmas Sweater) probably bought in the 70's. Any idea where I can find out their worth?
ReplyDeleteI am researching Eaton's during the First World War. Eaton's paid the wages of any employee who signed up to serve in Europe - full wage for married men and half wage for single men. I am looking to contact anyone who is related to or knows any relatives of any of the soldiers who enlisted in Toronto during that war. These stories will be part of an exhibit I am creating at Mackenzie House Museum in 2017. Oh and my dad work for Eaton's for over 40 years. I can be found at bbeaton@toronto.ca
ReplyDeleteI have a wooden pendulum wall clock that has been in the family for over 50 years. The story behind it is that this clock was used by the Eaton office staff in Toronto for their start and end times. If anyone knows of any pictures of the Eaton office(with a wooden wall clock), I would be very interested in seeing them to see if this was the actual clock
ReplyDeleteHi, I am downsizing and need to find new homes for some Eaton memorabilias. Please let me know if you have an ideas of what I should do with them. I have
ReplyDelete1. a round tray painted red in the center. It has a wooden rocking horse with a Christmas wreath around its neck, in the center of the tray.
2. A CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT, VERY PRETTY STITCHING, OF A LOG CABIN celebrating CHRISTMAS WITH a label EATON'94 attached. It is contained in its original box which has a cellophane window and Eaton 94 printed the cover.
3. an Eatons credit card
Thank, Rose
Hello Rose! I have a collector that is interested, and would like to see a photo. Can you please email me at bakgraphics@comcast.net, and I will put you in touch with him.

When the Montreal store was expanded in 1960, it was said to be the largest store in the company at 1,052,000 square feet. Does your figure of 1,613,000 square feet also include the annex?
ReplyDeleteYes, it includes the annex. I would have to check into my records to see if I have a number for the main store alone.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteBy any chance would you happen to know the size of the entire Toronto complex prior to the Eaton Centre's construction (main store, annex, mail order and factories)?
ReplyDeleteSadly, I don't but I think it is buried in my records. I can try to find it. It is my opinion that if the complex had been preserved and re-used it would be the finest example of industrial heritage in North America. What replaced it is faceless and alreadylooks, to me, dated.
ReplyDeleteWell if you ever feel like searching through your records and find out those statistics please post them! I've been trying to compile a list of Canada's largest department stores (out of my own curiosity) but finding anything about the Toronto store is a challenge, simply because results are flooded about the current Eaton Centre.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in that the current store already looks dated. I believe nowadays we have more insight and foresight when it comes to heritage preservation, at least compared to the 60's and 70's when most North American cities were trying to "modernize". Winnipeg almost lost its Exchange District in that decade, there were plans to build freeways through it and several high rise buildings.
I have a EATON'S Gift Certificate - $5.00
ReplyDeleteIs there any cash value to it?
Hello, I am writing from memory a story for our Historical Foundation's newsletter about the T. Eton's trucks that, during WWII would bring men out of work in the city to the farm areas, drop them off in the morning and pick them up at about 7 p.m. at night. Do you have any archives telling this story. I don't want to get the story wrong. Thanks, Ann Price
ReplyDeleteI am writing from memory a story for our Historical Foundation's newsletter about the T. Eaton's trucks who, in WWII, brought unemployed men from city to a countryside drop off to work on the farm for the day. Do you have any archives with information about this event?
ReplyDeleteI had not heard that . . . but it does not surprise me that Eaton's would do that. You may want to check with the Archives of Ontario - T. Eaton Fonds to see if they have anything. The collection is well-described on line. Also, the searchable archives of the Star and the Globe and Mail might be of help, too.
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
Eaton's was Canada's store. Santa Clause Parade .

ReplyDeleteI have a framed limited edition print of the Hamilton store at Xmas time. The Eaton Xmas windows were such a delight to see at Xmas. Is anyone interested in buying it? Email me at trudicbackman@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI also have a bronze money carrier that the store used to transport cash to the cash office.
I was a layout artist in advertising in the Hamilton store in the 70's. Great memories!
ReplyDeleteI have the last Eaton's Catalogue, and I would love to find out what happened to any photos that were shot by the Eaton's Photography back in the early 70's. I may be in some that were done at a lot of the stores modelling bathing suits ( I wasn't a model just helping out a friend). At one of the stores, Crowbar was playing on a stage. Any info would be appreciated. snakergirl@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI have just bought a mahogany table in Essex in the UK. It has a number of red plates underneath it with FINE FURNITURE Eaton's College Street on them. Is this a table from Eaton's in Canada? Was the mail order system use to export to the UK? I would be very interested in any information. d.baker11@sky.com
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for any information.
I have a J.F. LANSDOWNE (I believe is a PRINT, Handwritten name and Date, NOT a signature). Ring-Billed Gull. Does this have any value? Please contact me directly. laz1971@hotmail.com

I think the beautiful statue of Timothy Eaton is now at the ROM in the basement shame! He should be back in the Eaton centre where he belongs most people today don't even know who he is? Put him back so we can touch his toe for good luck.I emailed Cadillac Fairview about this they never got back to me.Anyway just a thought. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteI worked for Cadillac-Fairview for many years , they are a real Pr*^# of a company .I can believe they did not contact you.
DeleteMy parents - Roland Alexander and Catherine Conlon worked at the College St. store and/or in another Toronto location, however they met later on at Camp Couchiching. My dad delivered mail and packages - and he really enjoyed playing for the company baseball team. My mum was part of some club and received a scholarship and medallion at Eastern Commerce HS. I have a number of magazines, pictures, and items. My grandfather Bruce worked in boys clothing. He received a gold ring when he retired. Can anyone shed some light on this gift? People are welcome to email me at econiagara@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI have an old stopwatch engraved with Property of T Eaton co no 3 on it. Anybody know the history of what these stopwatches were used for? Are they worth anything?
ReplyDeleteCan you please tell me the location of the Toronto Eaton's factory? I am writing a book set in Toronto 1930s, and am writing about some of the women who took part in the July protest, so I need to know where they would have exited the building. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteThat is a good question. Eaton's factories were located to the west of the main store on Yonge at Queen Streets. The little Trinity Church was once surrounded by 14-story factory buildings. The factory complex eas essentially to the west of the present-day Eaton Centre. There is a history and diagrams in my book - I should hope they have it at your local library.
Delete- Bruce
Note that the third picture of Eaton's on this site shows the factory buildings (and power plant smokestack) looming up to the north and west of the Queen Street store.
Delete-Bruce
I just checked - and the Amazon book preview for my book ends just at the point where I discuss the factories and their locations on the various streets in downtown Toronto. Instead of the wholesale destruction of these gritty but handsome buildings, that occurred in the 1970s, I wish that they had been renovated and re-purposed for various uses. They were incredible and the complex would be recognized as one of the finest industrial heritage sites in North America my opinion. You really ought to take a look at my book. It was a labour of love since I didn't make a cent off of it after all of the time, research fees, photo royalties anad travel I did in order to tell this beautiful story of a family and a store.
Delete- Bruce
I found a hard cover book dated 1935 which lists the Eaton's advertisements for January 1935. The book has approximately 200 - 300 pages with the print being white on a black background with a measuring tool on the left side of the page. I am assuming the ads were work-ups for print in the local newspaper at the time. Can you tell me anything about the book and if you think it might have some value to someone. Thanking you in advance.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. I would contact the Archives of Ontario; it should be added to the T. Eaton Fonds resident there.
DeleteI found two silk paintings both framed by T. Eaton House and Furnishings. They are Asian landscape/village scene. Both are sealed with red stamp and signed with black text. Any information would be much appreaciated.
ReplyDeleteI have a Stereo that is signed as the maker of it was Bob Simpson. Model E7S29 English Walnut. Serial # B 287050 Msde in Canada...my mom had it and I'm wondering about it's worth and history. Thank you
ReplyDeleteElectrohome in Kitchener manufactured most of Eaton's console hi-fi's under the Viking label.
DeleteMy father worked for Eatons as a furniture buyer for over 30 years and when he retired he got nothing. Nothing! The sons were rich and the descendants got money and my father lived off CPP. Shameful awful behavior. The Eaton family and their descendants should be ashamed and embarrassed.
ReplyDeleteMy father worked for Eatons as a furniture buyer for over 30 years and when he retired he got nothing. Nothing! The sons were rich and the descendants got money and my father lived off CPP. Shameful awful behavior. The Eaton family and their descendants should be ashamed and embarrassed.
ReplyDeleteAll employees that worked for Eaton were enrolled in a retirement savings plan after 5 years of employment, this was not part of the company's assets and could not be accessed by the creditors. The savings plans of employees were protected by law.
DeleteHello I have a horse hide leather jacket that has a T. Eaton label, and I am trying to date it. It has a rough wool lining. Be very interested to find out something about it.
ReplyDeleteI have a desk with a brass label on the back. Would like to know the year and description as there appears to be missing a top piece. There is a number 214 on the back.
ReplyDeleteI have a distant relative...John Hays Hammond...from Northern Ireland who was the chief buyer for the stationery department of Eaton's in Toronto after WW I. We found him and his wife so sophisticated and urbane...they always wore the best of everything when they came to visit in Indiana.
ReplyDeleteI have in my possession, as I was told, the main clock that the office staff of the downtown Toronto T Eaton company came and went by daily.
ReplyDeleteI would love to have this verified if possible.
Not sure how this can be done other that maybe a picture of some kind.
It still is running…
